Atrial fibrillation is a common cardiac arrhythmia in the general population, with a prevalence that increases with age. Multiple cardiac conditions can predispose to the development of this arrhythmia, and genetics may be the cause in 5-15% of cases diagnosed with isolated atrial fibrillation.
The genetic study in atrial fibrillation allows the etiological diagnosis of the particular clinical condition and the differentiation between isolated atrial fibrillation and defined structural or arrhythmic conditions in which atrial fibrillation is part of a disease with other manifestations. Once the cause is detected, it allows family members at risk of developing this disease to be detected.
This panel is indicated in patients with familial atrial fibrillation and early onset of the disease (<60 years), especially in the absence of predisposing factors such as hypertension, ischemic heart disease, or structural heart disease.
The probability of finding a pathogenic mutation when a patient presents atrial fibrillation has not been clearly established. The yield could be higher in cases where there is a family history of this disorder and when it occurs in young subjects without a clear cause.

The panel includes genes with clinical and functional evidence associated with isolated familial atrial fibrillation. Furthermore, many of the genes included are associated with electrophysiological phenotypes or even structural heart diseases, in which the development of atrial fibrillation may constitute the first or the main manifestation, determining a differential diagnosis with familial isolated atrial fibrillation.
Priority Genes : Genes where there is sufficient evidence (clinical and functional) to consider them associated with the disease; they are included in the clinical practice guidelines.
Secondary Genes: Genes related to the disease, but with a lower level of evidence or that constitute sporadic cases.
* Candidate Genes: Not enough evidence in humans, but potentially associated with the disease.
